TWA stands for "The Whippet Archives". TWA is an international initiative to collect and preserve as many whippet pedigrees and data as possible, in order to give a good view of the breed and show developments in the breed, past and present, to allow whippet owners to discover the ancestry of their beloved pets, and to provide pedigree information to help breeders planning future litters and generations of whippets.
TWA is a user-driven database site with some supervision and editing by TWA administrators and TWA crew members.
Anyone who has an Internet connection may freely browse the site and look at the information that has been collected and that is made available. However, to add, edit or remove information you must first be registered with TWA.
The principle of TWA is to give registered users the possibility of collaboratively building up an informative database on whippets. TWA has succeeded in this very well. Founded in 2007, thewhippetarchives.net is the web's largest site dedicated to Whippet pedigrees with nearly 70.000 entries collected in only 2 years. This kind of large database is possible only with the help of users and whippet enthusiasts worldwide willingly and collaboratively sharing the information they have with TWA and each other.Due to the fact that TWA is a user-driven database there is always the possibility that the database includes incorrect information. Moreover, the accessible, open nature of the database holds the potential for both vandalism and inaccuracy. However, the advantages of this kind of large database are significant and clearly outweigh the disadvantages.
It is our goal, with the help of active users and TWA admins and TWA crew members who are monitoring contributions on a regular basis, to correct errors quickly. Over time the accuracy of this site is improving as it attracts more and more contributors. We encourage all registered users to help us maintain the high standards we have set for TWA by correcting information where needed and passing on information and pedigrees for the benefit of all users.
We have instituted a process of change-logs which will allow us to identify and follow up any time a member has modified entries on the site. If it turns out that someone has deliberately altered correct entries or in any way purposely sabotaged entries on the database by adding incorrect information this person will be excluded from the site.

What is Copyright?
Copyright is the right of the creator of an original work. The word copyright (a right to copy) indicates what this right is all about. Copyright gives the creator of a work for a certain time period an exclusive right with some limitations to decide of the work. Others must respect this right. Copyright is granted to the creator automatically. When the time period expires the work is said to enter the public domain. It is available for anyone to use for any purpose.
A work needs to have some creative nature in order to have copyright protection. A creative work can be a written work or an artistic work. Copyright is given for example to a poem, an article, a book, a composition, a painting or a photograph.
The exclusive right of the creator means that the copyright holder has the right to decide of the work exclusively. He/she can decide for example of the publication, distribution and adaptation of the work. He/she can also have some moral rights for his/her work, e.g. the right to be granted for it. This exclusive right has some limitations (e.g. private use). The copyright holder has the right to sell or assign his/her right to someone else. This means that a copyright or aspects of it may be assigned or transferred from one party to another.
Who has the copyright of a photograph?
The copyright of a photograph belongs to the photographer. The time of expiring of the copyright can vary but in some cases the copyright expires only 70 years after the death of the photographer.
The photographer can sell his/her copyright or parts of it to someone else. In many cases the photographer only sells a photograph without selling the copyright. In these cases the photographer has still the copyright but he/she sells the photograph for private use or some other agreed use. The photographer can also grant a license to use the photograph. In some countries personality rights can restrict the use of photographs. This concerns e.g. photographs of individuals.
What if my photo has been used without permission?
If you find that your photo has been used without permission please contact us. If a picture provided here infringes on copyright, we will remove it from the website immediately at the copyright owner's request.
Do I have the copyright of the information of my dog?
No. Copyright does not protect information itself. Information about dogs is not copyrighted, but is public information accessible via national dog registries, catalogues, databases, pedigrees or other paperwork. Therefore anyone can add a dog or edit the information about a dog including the name, titles, date of birth, breeder etc. This information is usually publicly available and it is not copyrighted nor is it private information. The owner or the breeder of a dog does not have the exclusive right to decide whether the information of his/her dog can be added to a database.
Modifications and additions of dog entries can be tracked through the change log.

The Whippet Archives are open to everyone and free of charge for users. In order to keep them like that we would kindly ask you to respect and observe the following rules: 1.) TWA is intended for real whippets and not fictitious entries or future litters, and, above all, it is most certainly not a place for litter announcements or any kind of advertisement. So please, no ads on TWA! 2.) Images uploaded to TWA must not be protected
by any third party copyright! 3.) TWA is dedicated to the Whippet breed and its history, starting in the late 19th century when the first whippets were registered by kennel clubs. To keep our archive clear and reliable we cannot allow longhaired whippets, lurchers or other mixes (exceptions are made only for ancient ancestors of the breed!) Please understand that TWA is intended exclusively for pure-bred whippets with registration numbers. 4.) Make sure to spell names correctly.
For a dog’s name the spelling found on its registration
papers should be used. a) The first word is capitalized Please do not spell names of dogs all upper or lower case unless the dog is officially registered with a name spelled this way! 5.) Titles are not part of a dog’s name therefore please do not add the titles of a dog as prefix or suffix to its registered name! Wrong: Ch Pencloe Dutch Gold If titles are added as part of a dog’s registered name, this has a number of negative side effects, e.g. this dog can then no longer be found in alphabetical listings, etc. There is an own field for entering a dog’s titles. Whenever possible please try to use the English abbreviation of titles. BIS, SBIS, group or puppy wins should be put into the notes field. |
